The Boudin Barndance - 1/17/2002

A busy night on the Barndance. Previewed a couple of area shows coming up: Robert Earl Keen who plays the House of Blues in Cambridge on Sunday night and two shows at the Iron Horse in Northampton on Monday evening, and Los Straitjackets with Peter Zaremba (Fleshtones) on vocals joining forces with the World Famous Pontani Sisters at the Met Cafe in Providence on Sunday night.

Featured the recent reissue of the 1974 Kitty Wells recording "Forever Young" which finds the Queen joined by the likes of Dicky Betts and Toy Caldwell covering material from everyone from Dylan (the title song) to Otis Redding to Dan Penn to Ed Bruce. While maybe a little risky for it's day (hence it being pulled from the shelves two weeks after release), it has aged well to these ears. Sort of a Cosmic American Music experience.

Lots of first-timers, too, tonight on the Barndance. Virgin spins went out to the new Don Wlaser best-of collection, Black-Eyed Dog, Bianca, Monarch of the accordion Pedro Ayala, Honky Tonk Confidential, and Jon Dee Graham's very excellent new one (he appears in Fall River on Jan. 31). Buttshaker of the week????? Fleshtones with Andre Williams' "Going Down to Tia Juana." Now onto the goods....
