Jazz: A Family Affair Jazz Journey 02/05/2019

 

There are many families of musicians.  It is almost like passing a family vocation from generation to generation.  Is it because the are predisposed to music or that they are brought up steeped in it’s essence?  We will explore a few of these families.

The Mills Brothers:  Father John Sr.  was a barber and owned his own barbershop and had a barbershop quartet.  Four sons were members of The Mills Brothers who used their voices in amazing ways, sometimes sounding like instruments.  Donald (lead tenor), Herbert (tenor), Harry (baritone), and John Jr (guitar, double bass, vocals)

The Marsalis Family:  Father Ellis (piano) who was a performer and educator and encouraged his children to embrace music.  Of 6 sons, 4 have made music their life.  Branford (sax), Wynton (trumpet), Delfeayo (trombone, record producer), and Jason (drummer).
