Kingston Coffee House April 21: Playlist & REPLAY

Vinyl Lineup

For Pete’s sake, we got the vinyl

The folk icon Pete Seeger was blacklisted from American network television and radio for over a decade during the McCarthy-era 1950s and 60s.

Targeted by House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1955, Seeger refused to name associates which led to a contempt of Congress conviction. We celebrate Pete Seeger’s music and activism on tonight’s show.

On Saturday April 26, local musicians will gather to honor Pete Seeger’s legacy at the Greenwich Odeum theater. The show is a benefit for the Rhode Island Folk Festival (RIFF)

The legendary British Folk singer Sandy Denny died on this date in 1978. Maddy Prior: “It’s a tragedy that a talented person in the prime of her life such as Sandy, with so much love to offer, and so much good work done in the past, could come to such a sudden and tragic end. It’s a terrible waste.” Former Fairport Convention manager: “Sandy was one of the major English girl songwriters, because she wrote like an English person and not under an American influence. She was an unfulfilled talent.”

  • “I decline to discuss, under compulsion, where I have sung, and who has sung my songs, and who else has sung with me, and the people I have known. I love my country very dearly, and I greatly resent this implication that some of the places that I have sung and some of the people that I have known, and some of my opinions, whether they are religious or philosophical, or I might be a vegetarian, make me any less of an American.”  | Read transcript of Pete Seeger HUAC testimony
