We remembered the great country singer Don Walser on The Boudin Barndance this
evening. Don passed away at his home in South Austin, Texas yesterday
afternoon. He was a personal favorite of mine who also happened to be the first
country act I ever encountered on my first trip to Austin, Texas in the early
1990s. Or make that accidentally encountered as I was heading to a Friday
afternoon happy hour show at Antone’s to see steel great Jimmy Day who was
playing with some group called the Pure Texas Band and lo and behold when my
wife and I arrived at Antone’s, there was no steel player on stage. We were
ready to high-tail it out of there when we heard that voice and Don’s band
kicked into gear. We were instantly hooked and were fans from that day on. In
addition to the Walser remembrance, also featured a number of new releases for
the first time on the program. They included the latest recordings from Bobby
Bare, Jr., Wayne Hancock and Will Kimbrough. Buttshaker of the week????? Mr.
Walser with the hot-stepping “Shotgun Boogie”. Now onto the goods….
