Pretty durn hot in the WRIU studio this evening what with the air conditioning at about 25%. Tonight’s big feature was devoting the last hour of the program to offerings from the Sarg record label out of Luling, TX in remembrance of the label’s head ramrod Charlie Fitch who passed in May (and which I just found out about a couple of weeks ago thanks to the Austin Chronicle). I felt fortunate to get to visit with Charlie on a couple of occasions at his record shop in downtown Luling. He was a crusty old codger at the time (and not to happy about Ensure being the dominant drink in his diet), but enjoyed talking about the old records. As a matter of fact, the only telegram I ever got in my entire life came from Charlie to notify me of Doug Sahm’s passing. Featured some tunes from a few of the artists appearing this weekend’s Newport Folk Festival. By the way, how many of you caught the “secret” David Rawlings/Gillian Welch show at Nick-a-Nees in Providence last night? A nice show and they played for tips! They do it again tomorrow night at AS220. Lots of new things making the Barndance hit parade for the 1st time tonight including releases from Paul Burch, Tony Gilkyson, The Yayhoos, Golden Smog, The Sadies, and Jake Hooker. Buttshaker of the night?????? Keeping with the Sarg Records theme, we give it to Cecil Moore & the Notes with “Diamond Back”. Now onto the goods…..
