One of those nights where the program ended on a high only to come home and
receive the news that a favorite, Hasil Adkins, had passed away. Making it
worse was the fact we featured a short set of tunes from the Haze in honor of
his birthday tomorrow. What a bummer. Suffice to say we’ll be memorializing
the man next week. The said birthday set also included a couple from Willie who
celebrates #72 on Saturday. Previewed tunes from a couple of bands playing the
April installment of the Yours Roots Are Showing series at the Century Lounge in
Providence tomorrow night, namely The Spurs and host band Lucky 57. Lots of
releases making the Barndance hit parade for the 1st time tonight. They
included new ones from Vic Chesnutt, Todd Thibaud, Doc Marshalls, Elizabeth
Cook, Webb Wilder, Trio San Antonio (reissue), Eric Heatherly, and Jim & Jennie
& the Pinetops. Also began previewing tracks from the brand new Doug Sahm & the
Sir Douglas Quintet 5-CD set from Hip-O Select. This thing is so beautiful to
look at it’s hard to open it to take a CD out to play. What a job. Buttshaker
of the night???? In memory of Hasil, his chugging rendition of “Foggy Mountain
Top”. Now onto the goods…..
