A gorgeous summer night in Southern Rhode Island. Previewed a bunch of live shows in the area including James Hand at the Bank Street Cafe in New London on Friday night (www.bankstreetcafe.com), Jimmie Dale Gilmore & Butch Hancock at the Narrows Center For the Arts in Fall River, MA on Friday night (www.ncfta.org), and John Doe at Jake’s Bar & Grill in Providence on Saturday night. We were down to only two CD players (vice the usual four), so we went the 7″ route for a late set. New releases making the Barndance hit parade for the first time included recordings from Eliza Gilkyson, Dan Janisch, Nathan Moore, The Monahans, Teddy Thompson (a pretty good sounding country record!), $2 Pistols, The Derailers, and a compilation consisting entirely of Tom Russell songs called Wounded Heart of America. Buttshaker of the night????? From a 7-incher on the Cowtown label, Ralph Lane with “You Gotta Show Me”. Now let’s all have a cold one and get to the goods…..
