As of today, Southern New England has skipped Fall and jumped straight to pre-Winter. A cold, raw and nasty night, so perfect for gathering ’round the radio and imbibing on another Boudin Barndance. The first half of the show was devoted to a mix of stuff. First off, we remembered one of the great record men in Shelby Singleton who passed away last week. It was a “Shelby” mix of country and soul. Played some from folks coming into the area: Nick Lowe this evening at the Narrows, Trampled by Turtles tomorrow at the Narrows, and The Wiyos on Saturday at the Common Fence Point Community Hall. Also found some time to squeeze in some first-timers on the new release front including the new ones from Rosie Flores (with The Pine Valley Cosmonauts), Monsters of Folk, and Mark Stuart & the Bastard Sons.
The 2nd half of the program was devoted to Part 2 of our preview of “The Colonel’s Super Dooper Guitar Party”. We welcomed live in the studio, all the way from Finland, guitarist Lester Peabody along with local heroes The Cobra-Matics featuring The Colonel. They teamed for an hour of live music direct from the WRIU studio. The guitar party happens this weekend (Friday thru Sunday) at the wonderful German Club in Pawtucket, R.I. and features six-stringers galore from Duke Robillard, Mr. Peabody and Sean Mencher to J. Geils, Brownbird Rudy Relic, Orb Mellon, Paul Geremia and Barbara Lynn. There will be four sessions spread over the three days with clinics, a trade show, and plenty of live music. In other words, a must-attend event and especially if you live in these parts. Check out www.colonelsguitarparty.com for the complete skinny. Oh yeah, buttshaker of the week???? Johnny Burnette with a little lo-fi obscurity called “Boom Boom Boom Yippy Yi Ya”. Now let’s all grab a cold one and get to the goods….
