On 33 1/3, the band explores jazz (“A Little Closer”), blues (“Blues for Mr. Mu”), Caribbean rhythms (“The Girl With A Plan”), Eastern melodies (“East of Babylon”), and classical forms (“Allemande,” “Prelude in D Minor”). Despite the diversity, the album still feels distinctly like Acoustic Alchemy. Sat Nov 15 The Levin Brothers 7/8pm $44/48 Growing up in in Brookline, Massachusetts, Pete and Tony Levin were trained in Classical music but were also attracted to and influenced by the 1950’s jazz recordings by bassist Oscar Pettiford and French horn player Julius Watkins. Both were encouraged by Brookline’s music faculty to pursue music careers. Pete went to Boston University SFAA and then to The Juilliard School in New York City, Tony to The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. After graduating, Tony also moved to New York City. By the 1970’s. both were active in the New York City music scene, doing recording sessions and playing live.
