With temps in the teens, it had all the makings of a night for staying indoors and hanging close to the radio in these parts (as least that’s what we hope for with The Boudin Barndance faithful). Lots of features on tonight’s program. We did a twin spin of James Booker tunes in honor of his birthday. A South Austin institution, The Cornell Hurd Band at Jovita’s on Thursday nights, comes to an end tonight. I’ve had many a memorable night there, so we paid tribute to the CHB with tracks from what else but the Live at Jovita’s CD. (And Cornell will start a new residency in January.) The 11th annual Southern music issue of the Oxford American Magazine has just come out and once again the accompanying 2-CD set is all killer, no filler. We played some tracks from each of the two discs. You all owe it to yourself to go get it – great read and great tunes! Check out www.oxfordamerican.org. Finally, we featured tracks from the new gospel compilation Fire In My Bones (www.tompkinssq.com/fire_in_my_bones.html). Produced by Mike McGonigle who has been a force behind many of the Mississippi records vinyl-only releases, this 3-Cd, 80 track set is a monster of raw-as-red meat post-war gospel music that is way highly recommended. New and recent releases making their Barndance debuts tonight included recordings from Joe Swank & the Zen Pirates, Patrick Bloom, and Matthew Grimm (of Hangdogs fame). Buttshaker of the week???? Staying with the gospel thread, The Reverend Billy H. Grady with “Holy Rock”. Now let’s all grab a cold one and get to the goods….
