It’s amazing what a passing glance of a song on a hit television show can do for a career. Such is the case with the song “Am I Just One” by Chicago-based singer/songwriter Carey Ott which appeared as part of the music on a January episode of the ABC hit show Grey’s Anatomy. What with his debut full-length recording called Lucid Dream originally scheduled for a Spring release, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. For whatever reason, the album release date slipped to June and then again to October. Something tells me the lawyers figured in the delay. Who knows? Back to the matter at hand, while there’s no getting around the pop catchiness of “Am I Just One” (playable at www.dualtone.com), it’s just one of many magnetic moments on Lucid Dream. The latest addition to the pop/rock side of the Dualtone Records stable, a few listens to Ott’s songs of substance as found on Lucid Dream and the plain and simple is this is stuff with staying power. Aside from the fact Ott’s melodies are nothing short of engaging and a voice right in bed with the subject matter, the songs play more like vignettes adding a an extra special dimension to the package. Lucid Dream is a keeper. (Dualtone Records, 1614 17th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37212, or www.dualtone.com)
