A hot steamy evening here in Southern Rhode Island as we await Hurricane Earl. Our main focus this evening was the annual Rhythm & Roots music festival (www.rhythmandroots.com) which begins tomorrow evening and continues throughout Labor Day weekend at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, R.I. Previewed music from a bunch of performers appearing at the fest. We also welcomed Horace Trahan into the studio. Horace and his band New Ossun Express will be the host band for the weekend playing the main stage, the dance stage, and doing workshops. It is Horace’s 1st appearance in Rhode Island since the late 1990s when he appeared as part of D.L. Menard’s band at the old Cajun & Bluegrass Festival. He has a brand new release out called Keep Walking which is well worth your ears. In addition to the Rhythm & Roots preview, we had a bunch of new and upcoming releases making their Barndance debut this evening. This included new ones from Justin Townes Earle, John Brannan, The Steeldrivers, Jenny & Johnny (at The Met Cafe on Sept. 17), Limes (big thumbs up on this Memphis band’s new one), Chapin Sisters, and Jon Langford & Skull Orchard. Buttshaker of the week???? Horace Trahan takes the big boudin with “Funny Things Change”. Now let’s all grab a cold one and get to the goods….
