Summer is in high gear here in Southern Rhode Island. Beach, baby, beach! Opened the show with a set of music previewing music from some of the artists scheduled to appear at the Newport Folk Festival this weekend. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Stax Records (and what with this week’s documentary feature on PBS), spent the last hour of the program focusing on music from Stax. (As a side note, spent a few days in Memphis at the end of June and the Stax Museum of Soul is a must-see, IMHO). New releases making the Barndance hit parade for the first time included recordings from Carolina Chocolate Drops, Paul Taylor, Peter Case, Terri Hendrix, Little Pink, Bruce Robison, and a couple of Rebel records collection focusing on Ralph Stanley and the Seldom Scene. And also, Boudin Barndance condolences to Slim Chance on the passing of his dad. In remembrance, we played a cut from the band’s latest featuring Jimmy Kelly on harmony vocals. Buttshaker of the night????? A no-brainer, Otis Redding with “Trick or Treat”! Now let’s all have a cold one and get to the goods…..
