The primary focus of this evening’s Boudin Barndance was previewing music from artists playing at this weekend’s big event in the area, the 11th annual Rhythm & Roots Festival. It takes place at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, RI. Check out www.rhythmandroots.com for the complete skinny. As part of the preview, blues man Johnny Nicholas joined us in the studio to tell some stories and play some harmonica. Johnny showed up with only 15 minutes left in the program, however, the show after us let us go 30 extra minutes until 9:30 PM. Big thanks to Chad for that. Heck, with stories Johnny was telling we could’ve lasted until midnight. A Westerly native, Johnny was a vital cog in the Southern Rhode Island blues scene that flourished from the mid-1960s into the 1970s with the prime venue The Knickerbocker Cafe in Westerly. It was a scene that gave us the likes of Duke Robillard, Fran Christina, Greg Piccolo, etc. These days Johnny lives in the Texas Hill Country where he owns a terrific restaurant/roadhouse called The Hilltop Cafe (www.hilltopcafe.com) just outside Fredericksburg. He makes sure to get back to R.I. several times a year and is a mover & shaker behind the ongoing revival of “The Knick.” He’ll be appearing at Rhythm & Roots on Friday night with his Texas All-Stars band and on Saturday night as part of Marcia Ball’s Louisiana/Texas Revue. Check out www.guitarjohnnynicholas.com.

We also managed to feature some new releases on the program this evening. First-timers incldued Mickey & the Motorcars, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, Cordero, and Donna the Buffalo. Buttshaker of the week???? Marica Ball with “Watermelon Time”. Now let’s all grab and get to the goods……
