Kingston Coffee House Playlist #33: D-Day Dodgers, Raffi & Dennis Hopper

Dai Bando

On tonight’s KINGSTON COFFEE HOUSE, I’ll play selections from Laura Marling’s brand new release “Laura Sings Raffi,” a full album of song covers by  Raffi Cavoukian, the Egyptian-born Armenian-Canadian singer who revolutionized children’s music in the 1970s with acoustic, sing-along folk songs like “Baby Beluga.”
We will also play music from John Buck Wilkin, who wrote the original songs for Dennis Hopper’s 1970s directorial follow-up to Easy Rider.  the much-mythologized The Last Movie.  Wilkin’s mom wrote Lefty Frizzell’s classic “The Long Black Veil.”

Audio is available for 2 weeks after air date. Clip begins with the final minutes of Matt Mania’s always-awesome show The Trip

NOTES and LINKS

– “Heartbreak and toil and suffering gone, The lads beneath, them slumber on” | Lyrics to the song “D-Day Dodgers”

The Last Movie was over budget, experimentally edited, and written off by the studios, but it further established Dennis Hopper as a cult icon and maverick. Seen today, the film’s self-reflexive critique on the destructive nature of American movies is nakedly revealing | Read more about this

Marijohn Wilkin was a trailblazer in Nashville. Known as the “Den mother of Music Row”, she broke through as a successful female songwriter and publisher during a heavily male-dominated era. She is credited with discovering Kris Kristofferson and wrote the classic “The Long Black Veil.”
